I have an unofficial mentor and coach. She is a friend, about 15 years older than me, and retired from a very successful career as a senior level manager.

She is a high energy, over-the-top Extravert, always on the go, and always with something profound to say.

She is full of wisdom and knowledge, and I learn so much from her almost every time we talk. About life, about finances, about family and relationships, and about navigating in the workplace.

Recently she shared some advice that she gave one of her children who was contemplating a high-level promotion in the company she worked for.

Her advice was to “consider how they treat the people, how they treat their employees, how they treat their customers, how they treat the public.”

Consider how they treat the people….

Not just the salary. Not just the benefits. Not just the position description and responsibilities. But consider how they treat people….

Because ultimately, it’s about the people.
